SUPERCHARGED (S1E7): Welcome back to SUPERCHARGED, a weekly entry dedicated to highlighting the accomplishments of Marian Ancilla Charger teams and student-athletes throughout the school year. With the weather playing havoc on the Spring schedules, we wanted to spend this time looking back on what has happened thus far throughout our Spring season in each of the four sports currently active on campus.
BASEBALL (2-26 Overall; 1-8 MCCAA): The Marian University Ancilla Baseball team has had it rough, changing dates and field locations constantly due to weather conditions. They have picked up their scoring as of late, making themselves much more competitive most outings. Freshman Michael Fry (9-26, .346) leads the team in hitting, while Sophomores Logan Clark (24-75, .320) and Evan Lanphier (15-50, .300) have also been at or above the .300 mark three-fifths of the way through their season. Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron (19 RBIs) has driven in the most runs, Clark (5 2Bs, 1 3B, 1 HR) leads the team in extra base hits, and Freshman Kelton Weaver (5 SBs) leads the team in stolen bases. On the mound, Freshman Isaiah Vaca (5.63 ERA) tops the Chargers in earned run average, Vaca and Sophomore Kaleb Short each have a win apiece, and Short leads the team with 34 strikeouts in 27 innings of work. Next Game: 4/9 at Kalamazoo Valley Community College
GOLF: The Men's Golf team tends to start their season a little later than other Spring sports due to course conditions. The Chargers started their season a week and a half ago, finishing in 2nd Place at The Commemorative, hosted by Hocking College in Southeastern Ohio. Of the eight teams competing, the Chargers were 2nd overall but 1st among the three Junior College teams in attendance. Freshman Juan Pablo Benavente finished in a tie for 4th Place with a 2-round score of 158. Sophomore Hunter Zdyb was close behind with a 162, good enough for a tie for 9th Place. If you get a chance, come out and watch these guys, as they are a talented group chasing down their own high expectations. Next Match: 4/9 at Island Hills Golf Club, hosted by Glen Oaks Community College
SOFTBALL (2-10 Overall; 2-10 MCCAA): The Charger Softball team is coming off of their best day of the season, winning both ends of a double-header against Jackson College Tuesday evening. Without a Spring trip, their season got started a little later than normal, but they are starting to find their rhythm. Sophomores Cayla Beasley (11-26, .423), Kim Cummings (15-36, .417) and Morgan Fogle (10-30, .333) are absolutely crushing the ball right now. Cummings also leads the team in runs batted in (9 RBIs) and extra base hits (7 2Bs), while Freshman Abby Harmon (4 SBs) tops the team in thefts. In the pitching department, Cummings has been outstanding there as well. She holds a 3.97 ERA, she has the team's lone save, and she has struck out a whopping 51 batters in 30 innings of work. Next Game: 4/10 vs Lansing Community College at Charger Field
TRACK & FIELD: The Men's & Women's Track & Field teams have been involved in three different matches thus far, and while they don't have enough athletes for a team score, they have represented MUAC well with their efforts. Sophomore sprinter/hurdler Aaliyah Keil has been a standout on the women's team with her results in the short races, while Sophomore Ciara Bonner has done well for herself in the 800m each time out. As for the men's team, Freshman Omari Evans has improved each time and has made himself a real threat in the sprints, while Freshman Dylan Goff has been a top sprinter for the Chargers as well. Next Match: 4/10 & 4/11 at the Bill Bippes Invitational, hosted by Spring Arbor University
