CENTREVILLE (MI) - Saturday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team picked up their first MCCAA victory since April 18th of 2024, outscoring Glen Oaks 10-8 in the 9-inning thriller. Tied 8-8 through 7 innings, the Chargers plated 2 runs in the top of the 9th to take the lead for good and escape with the win. Below are some highlights from the triumph.

There was very little activity on the bases through 3 innings, then the Chargers struck first in the 4th inning, benefitting from a couple of Viking errors. Freshman Devon Ortiz was responsible for a nice sacrifice bunt between errors, helping to advance runners. Sophomore Aiden Marcus scored when Sophomore Evan Lanphier's ground ball was misplayed. Glen Oaks would answer with 1 in the 4th and 1 in the 5th, taking a 2-1 lead.

Then the fireworks came, as Marian Ancilla scored 7 runs in the top of the 6th inning. The Chargers took advantage of 2 errors, a walk, and a hit batsman, plus they smacked 5 singles as well, all contributing to their big rally. Freshman Cade Quick drove in Lanphier to tie it at 2-2, then Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron walked to give MUAC a 3-2 lead, scoring Redshirt Freshman Javier Higham. Sophomore Jose Paris hit a single to score courtesy runner Isaiah Vaca, a Freshman, and it was 4-2.

Freshman Kelton Weaver singled to score Quick, Freshman Layne Harman was hit by a pitch, scoring Negron, and the scoreboard read 6-2. Ortiz then hit a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score Paris, and Lanphier singled to score Weaver, making it 8-2 heading to the bottom of the 6th. Glen Oaks then found its offense as well, scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 6th and 4 runs in the bottom of the 7th, tying the game at 8 apiece.

In the top of the 9th inning, Freshman Michael Fry started the final rally, hitting a 2-out single to centerfield. Quick then stepped to the plate and was hit by a pitch. Negron was next, and he drove a fly ball to centerfield, landing for a double, and allowing Fry & Quick to both come around to score, putting the Chargers ahead for good, 10-8.

Vaca (1-0) was credited with the win, pitching 2 scoreless innings to finish the game. He struck out 1 batter during that stretch. Sophomore Kaleb Short started the game, pitched 6 solid innings, struck out 5, and he allowed just 3 earned runs.

The Marian Ancilla Baseball team is back in action this Thursday (3/26) when they host Kellogg Community College in another MCCAA showdown. Game time is currently set for 2:00p, but it is looking like it could be moved to as early as 12:00p to avoid afternoon weather. Stay tuned!!
