Chargers Split with Cougars

PLYMOUTH (IN) - Saturday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Baseball team hosted Kalamazoo Valley Community College in their second double-header in three days (KVCC hosted on Thursday). During Saturday's session, the Chargers took the first game by a 6-4 score, picking up their third win overall and second MCCAA conference win of the 2025-2026 season. The Cougars struck back, however, winning game-2, 9-4. Below is a quick look at some notes/highlights from Saturday's activities.

GAME-1 (W 6-4): In the first matchup of the day, the Cougars utilized a string of singles in the top of the 1st inning to take a 2-0 lead. Marian Ancilla would answer back in the bottom of the inning, as Sophomore Logan Clark drew a walk, Sophomore Jose Paris bunted him over to second base, then Freshman Devon Ortiz hit a single to centerfield, scoring Clark, and it was 2-1 KVCC.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 4th inning that anyone lit up the scoreboard again, this time with it being the Chargers adding a pair of runs. First, Redshirt Freshman Owen Negron singled, then Freshman Michael Fry was hit by a pitch. Following a Jaxson Hixson sacrifice bunt to move Negron & Fry up a base, Negron scored from third base on a wild pitch. Three pitches later, Freshman Kelton Weaver grounded out to second base, however, Fry was able to cross home plate during the same play, and it was 3-2 with the Chargers back on top.

Kalamazoo Valley would get another run in the top of the 5th inning to tie the score at 3-3, but the Chargers were active and aggressive in the bottom of the 5th, adding yet another 3 runs, and it was 6-3 good guys. The Chargers utilized 3 singles, 2 walks, and a hit batsman to accumulate their 3 runs, with Clark driving in the final run on a hard ground ball to right field.

The Cougars would pick up 1 final run in the top of the 7th inning, but it wasn't enough, as Marian Ancilla won by a 6-4 margin. Freshman Jaylan Yates (1-5) finally picked up his first win of the season, pitching all 7 innings, allowing 4 earned runs, while striking out 3 batters.

GAME-2 (L 9-4): Following the game-1 loss, the Cougars of Kalamazoo Valley returned on a mission. They jumped out to an 8-0 lead with 3 runs in the top of the 1st inning, 2 more in the top of the 2nd, another in the top of the 3rd, and 2 runs in the top of the 5th inning. They also limited the Chargers to just a couple of base-runners during that stretch.

Marian Ancilla would answer with 2 runs in the bottom of the 5th inning on a solo home run by Sophomore Jaxson Hixson to lead off, then Owen Negron drove in Logan Clark on a single late in the stanza, and it was 8-2 Cougars. Kalamazoo Valley would get one last run in the top of the 6th inning, extending their lead to 9-2.

In the bottom of the 7th inning, the Chargers attempted one final rally, as they led off with a pair of walks from Freshman Armando Arroyo and Freshman Boaz Rice. With 2 outs, Negron again hit a single to the outfield, and Arroyo was able to score easily, while Rice was able to score from 1st base because of the throw in.

On the whole, the Freshmen trio of Kaydric TysonMichael Fry, and Layne Harman combined to pitch the 7 innings, allowing just 3 earned runs, and striking out 2 batters.

The Chargers are back in action this Thursday when they host Glen Oaks Community College at Charger Field. The Chargers defeated the Vikings, 10-8, in their only matchup earlier this season. Please come out and support these young men, if you are able!!
