BENTON HARBOR (MI) - The Marian University Ancilla Softball team, fresh off their first two wins of the season earlier in the week, had three weekend series on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. Saturday, they traveled to Lake Michigan College to take on the Red Hawks. Despite falling 12-0 in 5 innings in the opener Saturday, they battled back to win their third game of the year, 6-4, and earn a daily split. Below are some notes/highlights from Saturday's action.
GAME-1 (L 12-0 in 5 innings): The Chargers managed just 4 base-runners in this contest, but Freshman Lauren Bruce was responsible for a pair of singles, as she went 2-for-2 in the early matchup. Additionally, despite allowing 9 runs over 3 innings, only 1 run was earned for Freshman starting pitcher Mickayla Naanos.
GAME-2 (W 6-4): In the second game, Marian Ancilla found themselves down 1-0 after 3 innings. Then, the bats came alive. The Chargers scored 2 runs in the top of the 4th inning, followed by 4 runs in the top of the 5th inning, and held off a late Red Hawk rally to win their third game of the season. Sophomore pitcher Kim Cummings (1-5) was finally rewarded with a win, as she pitched all 7 innings, striking out 9 batters. Cummings also drove in 2 runs and scored 2 runs behind a 3-for-4 effort at the plate.
Freshman Lauren Bruce again hit a pair of singles, this time driving in a run, while Freshmen Abby Harmon and Mickayla Naanos also each drove in a run as well. Harmon and Cummings knocked doubles for the team's two extra base hits.
