PLYMOUTH (IN) - Saturday afternoon, the Marian University Ancilla Softball team hosted the Kalamazoo Valley Community College Cougars in an MCCAA double-header. After falling 9-4 in the first matchup of the day, the Chargers responded to knock off the Cougars 9-1 in just 5 innings in the second game, in what turned out to be one of their best performances of the year. Below is a quick look at notes/highlights from Saturday's action.
GAME-1 (L 9-4): The Chargers got things going early in this one. With 2 outs in the bottom of the 1st inning, Sophomore Morgan Fogle reached safely on a pop-up. Freshman Abby Harmon was able to score before Freshman Mickayla Naanos was thrown out at the plate, and it was 1-0 Marian Ancilla. Beginning in the top of the 2nd inning, the Cougars responded with 8 unanswered runs over 4 innings, before the Chargers finally found more offense.
In the bottom of the 5th inning, the Chargers attempted to rally. Utilizing a multitude of errors and walks to get runners aboard, Freshman Christina Grabowski tripled to drive in a run then scored later on a fielding error. Later in the inning, Harmon scored again on another Cougar fielding error, and the lead was narrowed to 8-4. But that was all the Chargers could muster.
GAME-2 (W 9-1 in 5 innings): In the second game of the day, the Chargers saw Sophomore Kim Cummings return for the first time in a few games to pitch a gem. She managed all 5 innings, striking out 4 for her second win of the season. What's more impressive is, she allowed all 3 hits and the lone run in the top of the 1st inning, then only allowed a handful of walks after that.
In the bottom of the 2nd inning, Marian Ancilla batted around, scoring 4 runs and taking a 4-1 lead. Sophomore Cayla Beasley singled in the first run, Freshman Samanta Mendoza grounded out but drove in a run, Freshman Christina Grabowski singled in the third run, and Freshman Abby Harmon doubled to drive in the final run of the inning.
The Chargers added a run in the 3rd, 3 in the 4th, and 1 in the 5th for the 8-run rule to kick in. During that span, Beasley drove in another run in the 3rd inning, Sophomore Morgan Fogle hit a 3-run Home Run to empty the bases in the 4th inning, and Freshman Ryleigh Reiblich doubled in the final run to end the game.
The softball team has just four games remaining this season, all at home. PLEASE come out and support these ladies as they search for their 5th win of the season. 5 wins would be the most in a single season since the 2016-2017 campaign. The Chargers will host Lake Michigan College on Thursday at 3:00p & 5:00p, then they will host Glen Oaks Community College on Saturday at 1:00p & 3:00p.
